Roxanne Visser, a 22 year old chef from South Africa, recently migrated to a coastal town south of Perth, WA; after receiving
employer sponsorship by an Australian restaurant/bar.

Due to the location of the employer, Roxanne was able to be sponsored under the Regional Migration Sponsorship Scheme (119); which meant
that even though her age and fairly low levels of experience went against her, she could be granted exceptions and still be sponsored.

The Regional Migration Sponsored visa, also known as RSMS, restricts Roxanne to working in a regional area of Australia for the first 2 years; and staying with an employer sponsor for that duration. According to Roxanne, this type of visa also offers her ‘full rights and privileges as if she were a permanent citizen of Australia’.

Pic – Roxanne at the Gold Plate Awards Where Her Employer Won the WA Telstra Business Award for Regional and Small Business

How did Roxanne Find an Employer Sponsor?

After deciding that she would like to migrate to Australia, Roxanne started applying for jobs online from South Africa. After about 2 months, she found a job with employer sponsorship, just south of Perth in the Margaret River region. Roxanne was interviewed over Skype before being offered the position. She migrated to Western Australia on 16th June, 2011.

Roxanne found the process of applying for jobs in Australia from overseas ‘extremely difficult’.

“Considering my age and lack of experience in my field, I was going out on a limb and looking back now, realise how lucky I am to be in the fortunate position I am in at the moment.”

Roxanne attributes her success and perseverance to ‘fate pushing her in the right direction’.

Roxanne happened across the www.sponsorshipaustralia.net website in October 2010; and through that, learned about www.NabThatJob.com and their job sponsorship search services. She approached the job search team at Nab That Job for assistance in her job search towards the end of October 2010. At the time, the job search team were only taking on cases for their Job Sponsorship Search Package where they were confident they will have a good chance of success at finding a sponsor in Australia. Roxanne was therefore advised that they would be unable to assist; as it would be unlikely to find an employer willing to go through the sponsorship process at her low level of work experience (only around 2 years’ experience, and a very recent graduate from City & Guilds).

However, Nab That Job had recently completed a recruitment drive for chefs, and had an employer in Western Australia on their books looking for a suitable chef to sponsor.

“The employer in WA was looking for a fresh chef with minimal experience, and a great attitude so that the owner could train them on the job to meet his and his teams’ requirements,” said Nadine Myers, Managing Director of Nab That Job.

“We contacted the employer with Roxanne’s details and he was immediately impressed with Roxanne and set out to arrange an interview,” said Ms Myers.

In late November, Roxanne had a Skype interview with the manager of the establishment; and was offered a formal employment contract in December 2010.

According to Ms Myers, Roxanne’s timing could not have been more perfect for contacting Nab That Job.

“I contacted Nadine [Myers] through Nab That Job who informed me that she couldn’t help me due to the lack of experience etc. However, she had enough faith in me to have contacted one employer with a need for somebody with less experience, and thought we could take a chance. Turned out to be my lucky chance, as it was the one and only application made through Nab That Job, and I was offered the job after conducting a Skype interview,” described Roxanne.

6 Months later, Roxanne was on an airplane on her way to start her new life in Margaret River, Western Australia.

What Roxanne Did To Find a Sponsored Job in Australia:

Roxanne applied for jobs online for a period of about 2 months, from South Africa.

“I was extremely persistent with every person I came in contact with, including job applications that I made, arguing the reasons why they should sponsor me etc. (without being overly forward).”

Serious about her job search, Roxanne started seeking out professional assistance to help her to find a sponsor in Australia.

“As well as persistently applying for jobs online, I was also trying to network with the right agencies and people who would be able to assist me in the process…That being Nab That Job and ICA Immigration.”

Roxanne’s Challenges:

Roxanne said that her biggest challenges for finding sponsorship in Australia was her ‘age, and lack of experience’; which she said ‘caused
major issues with meeting any specifications for the visas that could get her into Australia.’

It is not every day that Australian employers will, or can, sponsor someone in Roxanne’s position; however, her story holds true to the
saying, “that which you focus on, you get”. It was no coincidence that Roxanne managed to find a sponsor who was willing to take her on in Australia – Roxanne was simply so focused on reaching her goal that she made it happen for herself. She is not so open to receive all the credit for her accomplishment though!

Roxanne would not normally pass all requirements for sponsorship due to her age and low level of experience. However, due to the
employer being in a “regional” area of Australia, and through the knowledgeable use of ICA Migration; we were able to make use of some ‘loopholes’ that would enable the company to sponsor Roxanne.

“I was fortunate enough to find an employer who requested somebody with little experience, therefore passing it off as ‘special circumstances’”, said Roxanne.

Pic – Roxanne, Hard at Work in Australia

When asked what her biggest challenges were with settling into Australia, Roxanne replied;

“Becoming accustomed to the people in the beginning was a challenge but you quickly get use to that, and apart from that, in my particular profession, it is a matter of learning to work in the fast-paced industry, and getting use to the hard, long hours. Although realising, that every hard hour worked is experience to my name!”

Roxanne’s View on Australia:

Roxanne has found that Australia, in general, is certainly meeting the expectations she had of the country before migrating.

One point she wanted to make was that although many people told her that Australia would be ‘very similar to South Africa’, she found that ‘it is in fact very different too’.

Roxanne says of her experience of Australia:

“I have found [Australia] to be a very efficient country in terms of getting things done with regard to paperwork, Government issues, etc… It is beautiful, and although I didn’t really have an idea on what I was coming over to, it has blown me away to see what beautiful areas there are around.”

Roxanne’s View on the Migration Process:

Roxanne found the migration process longer than she had expected.

“It was a lengthy procedure as I had to contact an immigration agency in South Africa to assist me with the process. After many emails, and phone calls between all the relevant parties, a visa application was made.”

Roxanne said that she found the migration process ‘extremely nerve-wrecking at times, as the longer it draws on, without hearing any final news, the more you begin to stress about things that may have gone wrong’.

She also realised that ‘you just have to have faith’ that everything will work out.

Roxanne’s advice to people in this regard is:

“…realise that big decisions such as these, and considering all the paperwork attached, will take time; and patience is absolutely necessary.”

Pic – Roxanne’s Favourite Place in Her New Home Town

Roxanne found that using a migration agent to assist with the process ‘ensures all the right channels are taken to prevent the visa being
declined’. She also advises that ‘honesty is the best policy with any information, as this can remarkably affect the outcome’.

The entire process from the submission of Roxanne’s visa application, to when she was granted her visa and booked her ticket to migrate
was approximately 6 months.

The migration agent that Roxanne used, ICA Migration; was the first migration agent she found in the city she was living in South Africa;
making it ‘extremely convenient for her to deal with them regarding paperwork and forms etc’. She checked references of the company before making a decision to use them; and found that ‘they were all positive outcomes’.

ICA Migration also happened, by fluke, to be the migration partners of Nab That Job; whom she found on the internet around the same time.

Roxanne found the biggest benefit of using a migration agent as part of the sponsorship process as being a security blanket throughout the process, and it also gave her more confidence about the outcome.

“It was certainly a burden off my chest, and stress-free in regard to me not having to do the entire procedure by myself.”

Although Roxanne found the migration process to be extremely pricey, particularly using a migration agent; she can honestly say that it was worthwhile.

“[ICA Migration’s] experience in the field, and with all the vital information needed to make a decision this big, it certainly helps to have professionals to assist you.”

Roxanne’s ‘Best Thing’ About Migrating to Australia:

“The change of scenery. Considering my age, I can easily adapt to any situation; so at this point it is all about gaining as much experience as possible whilst creating a life for myself here, and travelling around the area to find out where I would most like to possibly settle down.”

When asked if there was anything disappointing about Australia, Roxanne answered;

“Nothing really, aside from people saying it is very similar to South Africa, where it isn’t actually. I have found the people to be extremely friendly and helpful, and where I thought in the beginning I wouldn’t get use to the small differences, and not being able to get, see or do things I use to at home, I have now found my feet, and small things like that don’t bother me. I am excited to try new things and find new favourites in Australia :)”

Roxanne’s Final Tips:

”Stay positive and motivated…if you really want it, it will happen for you. You just need to persevere.”

“As for the situation you are in, depending on whether you are migrating alone or with a family, prepare yourself for change; the first 3 months are going to be a yo-yo of up days and horribly down days where you miss friends and family back home, but if you simply take it day by day and keep the reasons for you migrating in in the back of your mind the whole time, you’ll realise it is all worthwhile.”

To those people who are currently looking for employer sponsorship in Australia, Roxanne says;

“Keep trying!!! Stay as optimistic as possible. Pick yourself up after getting a rejection and just know there’s something out there that’s going to work for you!”

Richard Pease, a senior landscaper from the UK, found sponsorship in Perth, Western Australia, arriving to start his new life there on 31st August 2010.

At 40 years of age, Richard had initially made an application for a GSM visa based on his skills as a Landscape Gardener (in March/April 2009). However, in late 2009, the DIAC made announcements that they were temporarily postponing the processing of many visas, including Richard’s, which forced him to take a different approach.

“I could not wait until the projected processing date of 2013, so Nadine from ‘Nab That Job’ was recommended to me by a migration agent,” Richard said. And he commenced his search for sponsored employment in early 2010.

Richard had been applying for jobs from outside of Australia, and hence his decision to engage an Emigration Job Search Strategist to assist him with his search. He has purchased the Australian Job Sponsorship Package from Nab That Job, which included rewriting his CV in a competitive Australian format, creating a cover letter / email template addressing his sponsorship requirement, a tailored job search strategy for him to implement and a CV distribution service to suitable companies and employment agencies within his States of choice.

Richard also took a very proactive approach with his job sponsorship search and left no stone unturned until he received an offer of sponsorship that he was happy with.

Being proactive in his job search, Richard sought out landscaping companies in Australia and applied to them directly.

“I simply went onto Australian Yellow Pages website and sent my CV accompanied by cover letter to at least 150 Landscaping Companies,” said Richard.

Although he did most of the ‘legwork’ himself, Richard says:

“Much of the credit goes to Nadine from ‘Nab That Job’, as without that all-important re-vamped/re-formatted CV together with help on cover letter, I would definitely not have been as appealing to any prospective employer.”

From the time that Richard engaged Nab That Job to assist him with his job sponsorship search, to the time that he had a signed contract from his sponsor, was approximately 6 months.

The assistance from Nab That Job, together with the many companies Richard contacted directly; brought about many interviews and Richard in the end received four job offers in regions of Adelaide, Canberra and Perth. Having the option of four jobs, Richard was able to make a decision based not only on the role itself, but also on the location and lifestyle which he wanted for himself and his family.

Richard therefore selected the role in Perth, and received 457 Temporary Business Visa, valid for four years. This visa had restrictions upon it so that he could not work in NSW, QLD or VIC.

Richard’s Top Tips

“Get advice on securing the best exchange rate for your money.” Richard used OzForex, who were able to assist him with transferring his money to his Australian bank account at the right time in regards to exchange rates.

“I would recommend making a visit to see where in Australia you would like to settle”. Richard and his family moved to Perth, however, he admits that he would have preferred to have waited for a job placement/sponsor in Melbourne or Sydney.

“As to advice I would have to offer others, I would definitely recommend any person seeking sponsorship/jobs to get in touch with Nadine from ‘Nab That Job’.”

“Nadine offers a brilliant job search strategy which I also made use of”

Richard feels that the main things that helped him to find sponsored employment in Australia were:

“Being bold and getting my name out there. I sold myself, I did not give up and eventually I managed to get four job offers via telephone interviews.”

In Hindsight

The most challenge part of finding a job in Australia for Richard was the “endless paperwork I had to produce when acquiring my skills assessment by TRA (Trades Recognition of Australia).”

Richard feels that he made the mistake of emigrating to Perth with his family without making a visit first. At the time, Richard thought that the money spent on this expensive holiday would be better spent towards the cost of moving. “But in hindsight, it would have been money well spent,” he says.

Richard found the migration process ‘difficult’. “It would have been much easier had the DIAC not done a U-turn on the processing of my visa to start with,” he says.

Richard had appointed a UK based migration agent, but decided against using the agent in the end as he felt that they were ‘dragging their heals slightly and were not proactive enough.’ He did end up losing his deposit due to this, however, he was not sorry about that decision.

On Life in Australia

Richard did not find ‘any challenges whatsoever regarding fitting in with his work colleagues’. However, he did report that he had heard from other migrants, particularly those in the health and medical sector, that they had issues settling in because they had been placed at the bottom of the ladder, as well as being slightly left out by colleagues. In Richard’s experience though, he feels that this scenario does not apply to the trades industry.

In Richard’s opinion, the best thing about migrating to Australia is the ‘weather, lifestyle, and laid-back approach. ‘

“The Australians are a very nice approachable nation of people. I/we also feel very safe here, much more so than in UK”, said Richard.

Richard’s Job Search Strategy and Advice in Brief:

Have a professional create a high-impact CV for the Australian job market

Receive advice and guidance from an Australian Emigration Job Search Strategist

Implement a tailored job search strategy developed by a specialist, such as Nab That Job

Be proactive in your search and seek out companies you can approach directly – Richard used www.YellowPages.com.au to get names and contact details of suitable companies

Apply directly to at least 150 companies, and follow up on your job applications with a friendly email or phone call

Arrange several interviews so that you can have a choice of location

If you are not sure about the location of your job offer, make a trip to Australia to explore the area and determine whether you would be happy living there

Richard’s Final Recommendations:

“The professionalism, experience and advice that came with this specialist service [Nab That Job] was second to none and I would recommend any person seeking employment in Australia get in touch with Nadine as a first-stop shop!”

The review of the Australian job market during October 2010, reporting on which occupations are offering sponsorship jobs in Australia at the time, proved to be very popular and as such we have decided to do regular reports on the market so that you can know how the market is looking for your profession, and get an idea of your likelihood of finding sponsorship via job search websites.

I say “via job search websites” because the statistics reported are based on the number of jobs in Australia that are being advertised as offering sponsorship. This therefore does not mean that these statistics are a 100% accurate reflection of the market. However, these statistics are a good indication of which occupations in Australia are currently in demand, and are therefore more likely to be offering sponsorship.

During November and December 2010, there were a total of 1143 jobs advertised with sponsorship*, and surprisingly, there was no decline in jobs being advertised during December, which is a usual occurrence during the Christmas/New Year period. This may be due to a number of factors, including that jobs can be automatically posted and therefore employers and recruiters can continue to post jobs even when they are on leave. Or, it may be that there is such demand to fill these roles causing no lapse period in regards to job search.

As per our previous studies, the most outstanding occupational groups that advertised jobs offering sponsorship were again Medical and Engineering, with a significant increase in medical jobs of 12%. However, since our last report, there has been a significant decline in the number of sponsored jobs advertised for Trades & Construction (-32%) and a small increase in IT/ICT and HR jobs (89% of which were for recruitment consultants).

The major occupational groups with advertised jobs offering sponsorship in Australia during November and December 2010 included the following:

• Medical – 32%
o Registered Nurses
o Registered Midwives
o Specialised RNs
o GPs
o Dentists
o Medical Specialists
o Sonographers
o Nurse Unit Managers

• Engineering – 14%
o Bridge Engineers
o Civil Engineers
o Structural Engineers
o Process Engineers
o Rail Engineers
o Design Engineers
o Pipeline Engineers
o Project Engineers
o Electrical Engineers
o Geotechnical Engineers
o Mechanical Engineers
o Safety Engineers
o Power Engineers
o Site Engineers
o Tailings Engineers
o Plant Engineers
o Mining Engineers
o Subsurface Development Engineers
o Works Engineers
o Managers Engineers
o Planning Engineers

• IT / ICT – 12%
o Engineers
o Architects
o Consultants
o Developers
o Analysts
o Specialists
o DBA’s
o Managers

• Trades & Construction – 11%
o Electricians
o Plumbers
o Drillers
o Draftspersons
o Fitters / Turners
o Quantity Surveyors / Estimators
o Concrete Labourers
o Mechanics
o Grounds Workers
o Auto Electricians
o Consultants
o Architects

The next most in demand occupational groups in Australia that were advertised offering job sponsorship includes:

• HR / L&D / Health & Safety – 8% (up by 2%)
• Finance Professions – 6% (up by 3%)
• Education Professionals – 5% (up by 5%)
• Managers – 4% (no change)
• Scientific Professionals – 3% (up 2%)
• Hospitality Professionals – 2% (up 1%)
• Administration Professions – 1% (up 1%)
• Sales & Marketing Professions – 1% (up 1%)

The biggest surprises over the past two months were the companies who were offering sponsorship for the following positions:

• Head Cleaner
• Pizza Maker
• Salon Manager
• Spa Therapist

The above positions are ones that have not been actively sought out and are considered to be positions that are not in demand in Australia. However, the employers who were looking for suitable applicants obviously did not agree with this view and opened their job search internationally.

Out of all of the jobs that were advertised during the period studied, the distribution of jobs in Australia offering sponsorship across each State are as follows:

• NSW – 34% (up 7%)
• VIC – 23% (up 11%)
• WA – 21% (up 9%)
• QLD – 18% (up 6%)
• SA – 2% (down 3%)
• ACT – 1% (no change)
• NT – 1% (no change)
• TAS – 0% (no change)

The number of advertised sponsored jobs in Australia increased in NSW, VIC, QLD and WA in comparison to the last report covering September & October 2010; with the greatest change experienced in Victoria, who had an increase of 11% advertised jobs with sponsorship over the past two months.

Victoria appears to be suffering from a shortage in IT, Medical and Trades Professionals, with NSW desperately seeking Engineering, Medical, IT and Recruitment Professionals; and QLD looking out for skilled Medical, Engineering and IT professionals.

Western Australia is suffering significant shortages in many sectors, including engineering, trades, medical, hospitality, and scientific professionals.

Once again, SA, ACT, NT and TAS were the States / Territories of Australia who advertised the least number of vacancies with sponsorship, offering less than 4% of all advertised sponsored jobs in Australia during the period.

I would like to reiterate that the low percentages of jobs advertised with sponsorship in Australia do not necessarily mean that you are less likely to find a sponsored job in these States, because not all companies will be advertising their jobs as offering sponsorship, so there would still be vacancies available to overseas nationals applying – they are just harder to find.

However, as stated previously, you should also keep in mind that NT, ACT and TAS will have less job opportunities overall (including those that are not offering sponsorship) in comparison to the larger States of NSW, QLD and VIC; as they are less populated States and Territories.
Since the majority of jobs over all will be found in these larger States, it only goes to assume that there will be more sponsorship opportunities there too. You should also keep in mind that the majority of people from overseas who are applying for jobs in Australia will be aiming for the larger States and cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne. This means that competition for jobs in these areas will be tighter, even though there are more opportunities.

However, I believe that all of these influencing factors balance out, and that you should aim for the areas of Australia that you believe you would be happiest; whilst also keeping your options open so that you are not closing off opportunities in regions of Australia that you may enjoy.
We have found that members of Sponsorship Australia who have found sponsorship over the past two months, have done so in and QLD, WA and SA, for medical, hospitality, sales and trades occupations.

The Australian NT have recently announced their State (Territory) Migration Plans, listing out the occupations that are eligible for State/Territory Sponsorship.

A lot of people who have not been to Australia do not know much about the Northern Territory – it is one of Australia’s least known States/Territories, but that does not mean it is not worth knowing!

I know many people who have made the choice to live in Alice Springs or Darwin, as they love it there. Apparently the night sky is amazingly lit up by stars in “the Alice”, as it is one wide open space allowing for ultimate star gazing opportunities. Not to mention the sunrises and sunsets over Ayers Rock, otherwise known as Uluru.

Yes, the Northern Territory is mostly made up of desert. However, if you have never been to Darwin, it is definitely worth a visit. There is talk of there being a magnet in Darwin. That it is the type of place you visit and don’t want to leave because it’s magic works on you. It is located in the central northern part of Australia, easily accessible to Darwin and the Pacific Islands. Darwin has the benefit of the waterfront region, as well as being a small city with character.

If you have seen the movie “Australia”, it does not give you much idea of what to expect, as Darwin has grown enormously since those days. It has quite a cosmopolitan feel by the waterfront and quite a lively night life.

Like other States of Australia, there are only a limited number of visa places available for State/Territory sponsorship. The NT Government makes clear in their announcement that even if you are successful in obtaining sponsorship by the Territory, this does not guarantee a job placement. “Success in finding employment in the Northern Territory will relate to an employer’s requirements, their qualifications, skills and experience and their level of English”, states the announcement (click here to view announcement by the NT Government).

Like the other State Migration Plans, the NT Plans will be regularly reviewed and occupations will be closed as they reach their plan levels.

After reviewing the Northern Territory Skilled Occupation List, the following occupations are available:

Most occupations require at least 3 years’ experience in your profession, with some requiring more than five years’ experience; and all occupations require an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher in each section; with some occupations requiring at least an average IELTS score of 7.0 or higher – especially the customer-facing professions such as healthcare, business, finance and ICT.

The Northern Territory has set out certain criteria that you need to meet in order to qualify for sponsorship; and this includes:

Tanja & Will, a young couple of 24 and 25 years of age from Germany; fell in love with Australia when they came on a Working Holiday Visa a couple of years ago. It was then that they decided that Australia was there they wanted to live.

Tanja is a Pharmacy Technician with five years’ experience in Compounding and Dispensing (in Germany), with also an apprenticeship as a Beauty Therapist. Will is a qualified Toolmaker, and applied for the 175 Skilled Permanent Visa back in May 2009; however, his occupation was removed from the Skilled Occupation List in July 2009, meaning that their 175 visa application could take up to two years to process.

They started to explore their alternate options, and realised that employer sponsorship may be their only option if they want to migrate sooner. They started applying for jobs from Germany, although they found it very difficult as they did not receive any responses.

They therefore made the decision to enter Australia on a 6 month Visitor’s Visa as they felt they could make more of an impact and make more progress on their job search if they were in Australia.

The couple arrived on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia in June 2010, and both were trying separately to find sponsorship, as they knew that if one found sponsorship, the other could remain in Australia and work too. Four months later, Will found employer who was willing to sponsor him as a Toolmaker. Their application was submitted in September 2010, and was granted shortly after in October 2010, allowing them both to celebrate and settle into their new life in Queensland.

It was a 457 visa that Will was sponsored on, allowing Will to be employed as a Toolmaker for the one employer for the period of the visa; and since Will and Tanja are a defacto couple, Tanja also now has the rights to live and work in Australia for the same period of time; although Tanja’s visa allows for her to work for whomever she pleases during the length of the visa. At the completion of their 457 visa, Will can then ask the company to sponsor their permanent residency application, or look at their other visa options.

It was not until they returned to Australia that they were able to make more of an impact on their job search, as they could meet with people face-to-face and people were more receptive to them, compared to when they were applying for jobs from Germany.

Since they had already applied for the 175 Skilled Permanent Visa, they already had their IELTS test scores, had arranged for their references and certificates to be translated into English, and they also obtained a positive skills assessment for Will as Tookmaker; which gave them the confidence to come back to Australia on a serious job search.

Although it took four months to find sponsorship in Australia, they found that there were several companies who were interested in them both, however, they were unable or unwilling to sponsor them. It was therefore a day of celebration when they finally managed to find a sponsor for Will.

One of the tips that Tanja and Will offer to others who are seeking job sponsorship in Australia is to, “improve your CV by using the nabthatjob.com site”. They found that after improving their CVs so that they were more effective for Australia, they received more positive responses from their job searches.

The job search strategy that Tanja and Will followed and that they recommend to other job sponsorship seekers is as follows:

“Ask a lot of people where they are working and drive there directly. Or just look the addresses on yellowpages. Drive there and give them your CV. If you send them an online application, call them a few hours later and ask them if they have received it. To get into the hidden job market instead of applying for open positions. Don’t mention that you are looking for sponsorship and write an (Australian) address on the CV. If they reply you can tell them otherwise they delete it straight away even if you are a good person.”

When asked what the main thing was that helped them to find a sponsored job in Australia, they answered “talking to people”. This was made much easier once they were in Australia, and they also then had the opportunity to make face-to-face visits to employers.

What Tanja and Will found the most challenging part of their job search was to “tell the employer that I need a sponsorship visa”. Although they had a lot of people interested in them both, they found that announcing the truth of their situation often created a brick wall. However, by not mentioning this fact up front, they were able to meet with many employers and this gave them confidence that their skills were marketable and it was just a matter of time and patience.

Tanja and Will do not regret their decision to go to Australia to search for employment, and would not change a thing about their job search if they had to do it all over again. They were very grateful to have enough money to support them during the process and if you are planning on doing something similar, we recommend that you have enough money to cover your expenses for at least 6 months.

Once the pair received their visas, Tanja was able to secure employment too, and did so easily from all of the contacts that she had already made over the four month period. When asked what the biggest challenge about integrating into the Australian culture and lifestyle, they answered that the language has been the toughest thing, since German is their first language.

Both Tanja and Will have found that Australia is meeting the expectations they had of the country before migrating, and in fact are finding the conditions and lifestyle better than what they had in Germany. “I need to work less than in Germany and will get better money. I live close to the ocean and have an easy going life, ” says Tanja, content with her new life in Australia.

The migration process they both found quite difficult due to the constant changes to the rules. “You always need to be up to date to make sure you can still apply for migration”, said Tanja.

The 457 employer sponsorship visa was applied for onshore, and a migration agent that was based in Queensland, Australia, was engaged for the sponsorship application. Tanja and Will found the experience of using a migration agent very good. “He prepared all the paper and was answering all my questions,” said Tanja. The agent that they used was selected by the sponsoring employer.

Tanja and Will find that the best thing about migrating to Australia is ‘The weather and the multicultural people in Australia’. However, the one “let-down” that they have experienced so far is that Australia doesn’t ‘have the same food in the shops like in Europe.”

Tanja and Will had the advantage of knowing so much already about Australia since they had already spent one year there on their Working Holiday Visa. They had learned all that they could about applying for employer sponsorship through their research, and also through learning from their own experience when applying for sponsored jobs.

In summary, Tanja and Will’s strategy for finding employer sponsorship in Australia was:

Stay on top of the migration rules and laws

Be prepared and organised, ensuring you have all of the necessary documents you need to apply for sponsorship

Ensure you have sufficient funds to support yourself without work in Australia for at least 6 months

Have an effective Australian resume prepared before you start applying for jobs

Talk to people – after every application, follow up with a phone call

Make personal visits with your CV to companies where ever you can

Use the hidden job market, and don’t just apply for jobs through job search websites

Search for potential employers using www.yellowpages.com.au

Don’t mention that you are looking for employer sponsorship until the interview

Remove your home address from your CV and include an Australian address and contact number

Choose an area of Australia that you know you would love to live and spend all your time and energy applying for jobs and staying focused

“I had been looking for work in Australia for about two years on my own before finding (Nab That Job in Australia!’s) website online, and within a few short months of contacting Emigration Job Search Strategist, Nadine Myers, I was living in Melbourne!”, says Keith Chalmers, a Senior Interior Designer from Canada who found employer sponsorship in Melbourne.

Keith engaged Nab That Job in Australia! To assist him with preparations for a trip he was making to Melbourne for his job sponsorship search in February 2010. During that visit, Keith managed to have a couple of interviews – one with a recruitment agency, and another with a company. The company he met with had a position that they were willing to sponsor Keith for, however, Keith did not feel it was quite right for what he was looking for; and did not want to take any position in order to migrate to Australia – after all, this was going to be his new life, and he wanted to be able to enjoy it.

After returning to Canada, Keith went back to the drawing board, feeling that the trip to Australia may not have progressed him any closer to migrating to Australia.

“One of the first things I did was sign up for advert postings being sent to my email. I saw an advert on SEEK about a month after my return to Vancouver and it sounded like the company I interviewed with (they rarely mention firms names),” said Keith

Keith then contacted the design director he interviewed with via email and asked, “is this you?” When Keith had confirmation that it was the same company, he told the director, “great, I am applying!” Negotiations then began.

Keith was over the moon, and engaged Nab That Job in Australia! to assist with the sponsorship application progress. Danielle Ferris, Registered Australian Migration Agent of All Australian Visas, and one of Nab That Job in Australia’s migration partners; assisted Keith and the sponsoring company through the process and a couple of months later, Keith was happily living and working in Melbourne with his partner.

“Nab That Job in Australia! was key in helping me write a suitable CV that would appeal to an Australian employer. I had no idea North American resume’s differed from CV’s in Australia”, says Keith.

“Nadine (Myers) was quick on her feet, very accessible and basically held my hand through a very tough process. She also helped me build a wonderful online portfolio for potential employers to access,” says Keith.

Nab That Job in Australia! designed and created an online portfolio for Keith that enabled him to simply refer Australian companies to his website for examples of his work. Click here to view Keith’s online portfolio now.

“Keith had an amazing background and experience behind him in his field, with several achievements, including being featured on a national Canadian home improvements show as the lead Interior Designer”, says Nadine Myers, Emigration Job Search Strategist with Nab That Job in Australia!

“We knew that we had to do more than create a competitive resume for Keith – we had to design a way that will really showcase what Keith is capable of, and impress Australian employers with his skills and achievements. We did this through an attractive, easy to navigate Flash portfolio website”, said Ms Myers.

Keith’s key tips for other people who are seeking employer sponsorship in Australia, particularly those in an artistic profession are as follows:

“I definitely think having my resume re-done to suit the Australian market was critical in finding work. Our Canadian resume’s (CV’s) are very condensed, while the Aussies like to see A LOT more! I went from a 2 page CV to 5 pages! A Canadian firm would probably ignore it :-)”

“I also think building a website of my design portfolio was an excellent way for future sponsors to actually see my work and not just read about it. I had the link to my online portfolio in the CV, and the reader could simply click on it.”

“I also researched for days (weeks actually) to find suitable interior design firms to apply to. I created a list with contact info and bombarded the city with my CV. I probably applied to 200 design firms and had a response perhaps half a dozen times.”

“Applying thru search engines like SEEK or MyCareer was beyond frustrating. I often followed up with them saying I was qualified, but nothing happened.”

“With regards to recruiters, they are a tough lot! I did get an interview with one recruiter when I was in Melbourne, had a great interview, all seemed very positive. However, when I tried to follow up with them, I was ignored completely. I found this to be very unprofessional on their part.”

Keith recommends networking, as an important factor in finding employer sponsorship in Australia.

“Another thing that I did (as per Nab That Job in Australia’s suggestion)”, said Keith, “was to sign up on LinkedIn and since getting the job in Melbourne, two recruiters I had sent my CV to have asked to join my network!”

Keith laughs, “Funny, where were they when I needed them!”

Keith continues, “for me, ultimately it was a case of who you know, which I was told (by a recruiter) in Melbourne is how people find jobs in the city”, says Keith.

“And, small world, turns out I knew the design director from their Shanghai office. I worked with him in Toronto when I was in university. I never thought to look that far back for network contacts”, says Keith.

You can never look too far back for network contacts. Every contact you add to your network grows your network by at least 100. Make sure you use LinkedIn as part of your job search, as it is a very powerful tool for tapping into the hidden job market.

“If you’re looking to move to Australia to work and experience a new life Down-under, Nab That Job in Australia is definitely the company to contact!! I highly recommend them”, said Keith.
