Make 2011 Your Year for Migration to Australia

If you are looking to migrate to Australia, this could be your year!

Many people have been disheartened by the changes to migration rules over the past year, with so many skilled occupations being cut from the skilled occupation lists.

However, there has never been a better time to migrate to Australia through employer sponsorship.

Not only have Employer Sponsored visas in Australia been prioritised for processing; however, with the reduced number of general skilled migration applications being processed for Australia, employers are also noticing a decline in the number of skilled candidates available, and as such, are looking to overseas to sponsor.

One particular employer had been searching for a chef for his hotel in a regional area of Western Australia for several months, when he finally had to consider the option of sponsoring an overseas national. At first he did not want the expense of employing someone from overseas.  However, he soon had no choice and started considering skilled chefs from South Africa and the UK.

This is just one example of the many employers of chefs and caterers that we have worked with, who are looking to sponsor someone suitable from overseas.  However, the biggest change that we have noticed in the sponsorship Australia market has been the number of sponsorship jobs in Australia being advertised.  In the later portion of last year we saw on average, 100 jobs being advertised per week with sponsorship.  However, this past week has seen this number double, as more and more Australian employers are desperate to fill their vacancies with skilled candidates – no matter where they are from.

It is true, that Australian employers have a preference for Commonwealth candidates, particularly those from UK and Ireland, but also South African and Canadian candidates; however, employers are starting to look further afield, particularly when they have highly specialised roles to fill.

Specialised roles in the IT and Engineering fields are heavily in demand right now.  Our advice to you, if you are not specialised in your field, is to assess where your future is headed, and find yourself a niche, and concentrate on this.

A good way to get an idea of what niches or specialisations would be most in demand would be to look at the vacancies that are being advertised over the past few months.  Check through the Premium Members section of SponsorshipAustralia.net and take note of those adverts that are within your field and pay particular attention to the skills that appear to be asked for predominantly.  You can then do further research into what you need to do to fit what they are looking for – whether it be change career direction, do a course, request a department transfer with your current employer or change jobs altogether.  Do what you need to do to be in demand in Australia, and you will immensely increase your chance of finding an Australian sponsor.

Other professions that are in demand for sponsorship in Australia include all areas of the medical field – nurses, GPs, sonographers, dentists etc; as well as specialised trades people.

Those people who are applying for sponsorship jobs in Australia who have the biggest advantage, apart from those who are specialised; are skilled professionals who have at least 10 years in their field, or have at least 5 years management experience.  Good, skilled managers are in demand in Australia, and we are seeing more and more Australian companies willing to sponsor overseas candidates in this category.

Of particular note are those in the construction, trades or mining industries.  However, we have also seen many adverts for finance and particularly audit managers, mostly required in the Sydney and Melbourne metropolitan areas.  Finance professionals below supervisor level are finding it extremely hard to secure sponsored employment in Australia – and in fact, even those who have permanent residency and have already gained some Australian experience are finding the competition in this sector extremely fierce.

This also goes for IT and Telecommunications professionals.  We have seen highly skilled candidates from overseas really struggle to find interested employers, even those at management level or who are highly specialised.

Recruitment consultant positions with sponsorship are one of the biggest surprises of late – with loads of positions in this category being advertised on a weekly basis.  In particular, Australian employers are seeking degree qualified individuals, however, they are also looking at recruiters who have at least 5 years’ experience, and particularly those who have experience in a specialty area, such as IT, Retail, Property, Finance, Medical or other niche industry.  Again, preference is given to candidates who are from Commonwealth and English speaking countries.
