Western Australia have announced their State Migration Plan (SMP) this week, and the results are very positive, with various occupations qualifying for sponsorship in WA.
The eligible Occupations list for WA State Migration is much more pleasing than the QLD SMP, however, there are occupations that have already closed, such as Cook and Accountant. You should therefore take caution to apply for State sponsorship for WA asap, as you should for any of the other States or Territories of Australia.
Although the list of occupations is quite long in comparison to other States of Australia; the WA Government warns that by receiving State sponsorship, there is no guarantee that you will find a job. The SMP’s are created around the needs within WA, however, even with State Sponsorship, you still will need to compete for positions within WA.
Sponsorship Australia have been in touch with a few new migrants to WA who are finding difficulty in securing a position, so you will still be required to put effort into presenting yourself effectively and competitively for work in WA, and you will need to put focus and intent into your job search.
There is a strict working experience requirement for applying for State sponsorship in WA, especially if you are applying from outside of Australia. For general skilled sponsorship, you will require a minimum of 7 years’ experience; and if applying for regional sponsorship, you will require at least 5 years’ experience in your occupation. WA is more lenient for those applying for State sponsorship from within Australia, asking for 18 months minimum experience when applying for general sponsorship, and a minimum of 3 years’ experience for regional sponsorship.
WA has also indicated strict requirements for IELTS scores, requesting a minimum of 7 in each section for professional and management occupations; and a minimum of 6 in each component for technical and trade occupations.

If you are interested in migrating to WA via the State Sponsorship program, and you find that your occupation is not on the list of eligible occupations; there is still a chance that you will be successful, providing that you meet the following criteria:
– Have a job offer (if applying offshore)
– Have at least 12 months experience in your occupation in WA (if applying onshore)
– Have a minimum score of 7 in each section of IELTS
– Have at least 7 years’ work experience within your occupation
You can use all State Migration Plans as a guide to see what jobs are in demand in each State, and if you find that you do not qualify for State Sponsorship, you can determine which States would be the best for you to target for employer sponsorship.
